This committee seeks to foster a spirit of
unity within the parish by sponsoring informal social occasions. Twice monthly,
the committee provides coffee and donuts after the 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. Masses
in McClunn Hall. They coordinate other social events including potluck dinners,
dances, and the annual parish picnic. If you are interested in assisting with
social activities please contact Jim McCracken or Dick Bowman.
The Guilds of the Parish share the common
goal of service to others, particularly the designated needs of the parish.
There is special emphasis on prayer and lending support where necessary.
Existing Guilds include: St. Lucy
Guild (Mary Ann Burley), the St.
Rose of Lima Guild (Karen Ashworth -
703-309-3084), and the St.
Therese Guild (Janine England -
703-960-5549).
Mount Vernon
Council #5998 is composed of Knights from St. Louis and Good
Shepherd parishes. The St. Louis Roundtable within the Council works to support
the Pastor and Priests and to be involved in all church activities. One project
initiated and funded by the Knights is the St. Louis KofC Memorial Bell Tower.
The Knights also raise money for many charities including the annual Virginia
KOVAR drive which provides funding for
organizations serving the mentally retarded in the State of Virginia. The
Knights of Mt. Vernon Council give away over $100,000 each year to support
hundreds of local and national charities, like local schools, Diocesan
seminarians, hospitals and more. The main source for the charity money comes
form Mt. Vernon's Bingo Games which are run every Wednesday and Friday at the
Council Hall, 8592 Richmond Hwy (360-1964). For more information on the Knights
of Columbus call Dick Bowman.
The Legion
of Mary is the largest lay apostolic organization in the Catholic Church
with 7 million active members and 20 million auxiliary (praying) members
worldwide. The weekly meeting of the Legion includes praying the Rosary,
spiritual reading and discussion, reports on apostolic work, and a talk by a
priest. Members visit the sick in nursing homes and hospitals, welcome new
parishioners, visit the home-bound, and take the Pilgrim Virgin statue of Mary
to families in the parish.
