THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS
For the last several years, Church-appointed scholars have been making a new translation of the words of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.  All of the prayers of the Mass - the prayers which we say at every Mass as well as the prayers that change with every Mass - have been newly rendered into English, as called for by our late Holy Father, John Paul II.  In order to understand why a new translation is needed, and to prepare ourselves for praying the Mass in it, Fr. Mark Carrier will give two talks this Fall, on Thursday, October 7 and 14, in the church.  The first talk will focus on the definition of the Holy Mass and on its history and development through the centuries.  The second talk will include practicing with the new translation of the Mass prayers.  The Holy Mass is the central activity of the Church as it is the perfect worship of almighty God in offering  him the Body and Blood of His Son.  By preparing ourselves properly, we will offer Him this worship in an even more befitting way, and receive the benefits that come from a clear understanding of what we are doing at Mass, and why we are doing it.

THE TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS, sometimes referred to as the “Tridentine Mass”, will be offered at 7:30 PM, at St. Louis Catholic Church, on the following Fridays:  September 3, September 10, and September 17.  Missalettes are provided.  On September 3, we will  celebrate the Feast of  Saint Gregory the Great, Pope; and on September 17, we will commemorate Saint Robert Bellarmine.

THE TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS is now being celebrated at Saint Rita Catholic Church on Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM.  Missalettes will be provided.  Saint Rita Church has a traditional altar rail constructed of Italian stone!  Saint Rita is located at 3815 Russell Road in Alexandria.  (Between West Glebe Road and Mt. Vernon Avenue) For more information, please call Joanne at 703-836-1640, ext. 10.

ADULT FORMATION AT A GLANCE

Bible Study: Wednesdays, 7:30 pm; Walsh Hall. No Bible Study during the months of July and August.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO READ THE BIBLE?
The Bible is the recorded story of how God created and then saved the human race.  It is composed of two parts: The Old Testament, containing forty-six books of history, poetry, and prophecy, describing God’s dealings with mankind and his promise of salvation from sin; and the New Testament, which contains twenty-seven books of stories about Jesus the Savior and his early followers, letters of his Apostles, and an account that describes the end of the world.  Most Catholics are familiar with various parts of these Holy Scriptures, but how many of us have actually read the Bible from cover to cover?  It seems like a daunting task, since it cannot be accomplished in a day or even in a few weeks.  In addition, many passages of the Scriptures seem dense and hard to follow.  But with a few explanations and a little perseverance, ANYONE can read the Bible.  Think about it: if your copy of the Bible has 1,400 pages in it, and you read just twenty pages a week, you can read the entire Bible in a little over a year.  If you read only thirty pages a week (about seven or eight pages per day), you can read it through in under a year.  Starting this Fall, the Bible Study will be devoted to reading the Holy Scriptures from beginning to end.  We will be concentrating on reading as far as we can in about an hour and fifteen minutes per Wednesday evening session, with the aim of completing the entire Bible in about a year.  For an incredible, life-changing experience, bring your Bible and join us this Fall, beginning on September 15, at 7:30 PM, in Walsh Hall.  Any Catholic edition of the Bible will do.  Study guides, bibliographies, maps, and other materials will be provided on a week to week basis to increase our knowledge of what we are reading.

Latin Class: Saturdays: 10:30-11:30 am; Library
Fr. Carrier teaches a Beginners Latin Course! Please call Fr. for details.
